CHAPTER 10

Nighttime Lies, Temptations, and Hussy Revelations

Intending to remain in the tub until my uninvited visitors were no longer a temptation, I gave up on the plan long before I achieved my goal. I waited to emerge from the bathroom until there was a decent chance the men, who hadn’t obeyed a single order I’d given since their arrival in town, had left as I’d asked. And as I toweled off, I did my best not to hope Rhett and Zeke were in my bedroom after all—and only half succeeded.

“What am I gonna do with them?” I muttered to the baby dragon, who continued to sleep peacefully on the nest of towels, though I was really asking, What the dickens am I gonna do with myself?

I’d only ever been with Cole. He was a logical choice, and he’d make a steady, reliable husband. I’d be able to count on him for everything, including raising the children we’d inevitably have together, since Cole was a family man through and through. All he’d ever wanted was to marry, settle down, and start breeding the next generation of Denners to be forever trapped behind the boundaries of Uncle Tucker’s spell along with the rest of us. He made no secret of wanting an entire brood of little Berts running around.

Indeed, it was also the dream of many other Denner women. Since it wasn’t mine, I couldn’t decide whether those who desired this goal were influenced by the spell, or if they just naturally enjoyed the idea of popping out baby after baby with the ease of a hen laying eggs. I’d bet good money that Emmaline Bay would quite literally throw herself at the chance of marrying Cole and then going at it like bunnies. She’d toss our fine mayor on his pasty rump if she could get a chance at a man like Cole.

Safe, dependable, likable, and adoring, that was Cole.

Booooooring.

I startled at my own thought. Was that really how I felt after all the years I’d shared with him?

Yes, yes it was.

“Damn,” I grumbled to the little dragon, whose emerald scales glistened in the air, thick with condensation. I’d gotten chilled quickly in the cold water, and went the opposite direction, all but scalding off my skin.

“I can’t believe myself,” I commented, comfortable in my long-standing habit of speaking aloud even when my audience wouldn’t reply. “I should stay in here all night long. Well, at least till I gotta ride out to the portal n’ all. Just in case, ya know?”

Of course, Baby was blissfully unaware of the problems that come with hormones and the proximity of a scorching vampire and a sizzling dragon shifter.

I dragged my teeth along my bottom lip before realizing I’d done so.

“Hussy,” I reprimanded, only to discover that I didn't judge myself for it. “Hunh.” And why should I blame myself? Rhett and Zeke were hotter than spicy sin on a spit, rotating on a rotisserie. I’d have to be blind and have a few loose screws rattling around not to want to jump that.
